Fire in Helsinki, May the 5th, 2006.

May the 5th, 2006. Helsinki train station. We were on our way to the harbor in Helsinki to catch a ferry back to Tallinn when we saw smoke in the sky and anxious groups pf people moving towards it, making phone calls, looking around with eyes big with fear and confusion. We went in the same direction and had to stop near Kiasma, the modern art museum set just next to the train station. The was a heat wave and a wall of fire, basically we saw what you can see in the picture. 'Somebody blew the train up!' was my first thought.

It turned out that buildings on fire were warehouses occupied (only until that day) by artists, free souls, hippies and others. The city wanted to tear these buildings down, but somebody set them on fire in an act of protest.
